Catalogue Description: A beginning freshman course in writing with emphasis on paragraphs and the whole composition. Selected readings, theme writing, and individual conferences.
Textbook: Strategies for Successful Writing, sixth ed.; The New Century Handbook, second ed.
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to write well-organized, syntactically correct essays on the college level for a specified audience. The student will be able to state a thesis, provide sufficient support for that thesis, exhibit critical thinking, and form an effective conclusion in an essay free of mechanical errors.
Method of Evaluation:
10%: mid-term quiz
20%: completion of 11 exercises is 95, 9 is 80, 7 is a 75, less than
7 is 0
40%: essays
10%: responses on Discussion Group, 7 responses is 95, 5 is 80, less than 5
is 0
20% final exam essay
Late essays: 5 points off per day; I will not accept an essay more than 2 days late no matter what the excuse unless you make arrangements with me before the absence.
Attendance: After four absences, excused or unexcused, you must drop the class. I will no longer accept work turned in after four absences.
Drop Date: If you are unable to complete this course, you must withdraw from the class by the drop date. Withdrawing from a course is a formal procedure which you must initiate. I cannot do it for you. You may do this in Admissions or Counseling. If you stop attending and do not withdraw you will receive an "F" on your permanent record.
Lab: You must complete lab work to receive a grade in this course. If you fail to do the lab work, you will receive an "incomplete." Lab exercises must be turned in with the appropriate essay; 10 points off final grade if you do not complete exercises on time.
Final exam: Exam cannot be made up. If you do not take it at the appointed
time, you forfeit 20% of the course grade.
Plagiarism: If you plagiarize any essay, you will fail the course.
