Comparison of Internet sites
For the organization of this essay follow the advice for the comparison essay.
Content: What I want you to do is think of a subject you'd like to do a little research on: future colleges, companies you might want to work for, majors for your college career, cars (if you're thinking of getting a new one), anything you've always wanted to know more about (dinosaurs, archaeology, exotic vacation spots?). Then find several sites on the Internet: for instance, UTD and North Texas's sites. In your essay report what you learn but also compare at least two sites in terms of easy access of information, design, user-friendliness, graphics, text readability, live or dead links, or anything else that occurs to you.
Please give the web addresses for the sites you use so I can check them out. Make these addresses "hot." If you include the entire address, Word should do this automatically.
The purpose of this essay is to prepare you in a small way for your next semester of English, English 1302 which will train you to do research (as well as write an argument). A great many of the research sources we use in 1302 for online students as well as onsite students is on the Internet. The textbook even comes with a web site for research. And our libraries offer great data bases for research. Unless you really want to use books ("antiquated cellulose-based information retrieval devices") you can do all your research online.
So I hope this assignment will smooth your way for 1302.
Also, comparison is the most useful of all the writing modes (description, classification, process analysis) we have studied this semester.
Good luck and have a little fun with this last project!
