Week 1 June 2-6, Grammar week: please look at the index page on the other side of the cover of the New Century Handbook and review grammar. 

Wed.:  e-mail by 12 midnight. Exercises on website: Parachute, There is, Passive voice (1), Passive voice (2), Darwin. Please review the rules for Passive voice in New Century Handbook, p. 663, before you complete the online exercise.

Thurs.:  e-mail by 12 midnight: Exercise on apostrophes and possessives: read New Century Handbook, pp. 790-793, and complete exercise, p. 794
Exercise on subject/verb agreement and pronoun--antecedent agreement, read pp. 614-622, and complete exercise p. 619 and exercise, p. 623

Fri.:  Read examples of Descriptive essays in the textbook, pp. 446-460, Strategies for Successful Writers; also, read student examples on our website. Write your Descriptive essay over the week-end. Please read the directions for this essay under the icon Essays.

 

Week 2 June 9-13

Mon., : e-mail essay by 12 noon.

Tues.,: Read examples of Classification essays in the textbook, pp. 488-503; e-mail by 12 a.m. Exercises on website: Parallel structure, Thesis sentences (2). Compare your answers to Answers (website).

Wed., : Read student examples of Classification essays. Discuss your response to these student essays on our Discussion Group (Nicenet) and respond to other classmates' responses. Exercises on website: Punctuation, Complex sentences. Compare your answers to Answers (website). Please read the directions for this essay under the icon Essays.

Thurs. : Post rough draft of your Classification essay on the Discussion Group. Respond with constructive criticism to your class mates' rough drafts.

Fri.: General Essay (mid-term) topics will be posted on Discussion Group. Look for conference topic: Mid-Term Essay. Write this essay as well as put the finishing touches on your Classification essay.

 

Week 3 June 16-20

Mon.: Classification essay and General essay due by midnight Mon. Read examples of Process Analysis essays in the textbook, pp. 461-473

Tues.: Post ideas for your Process Analysis paper; respond to others' ideas

Wed.: Write your rough draft

Thurs.: Post rough draft of your Process Analysis essay on Discussion Group. Respond.

 

Week 4 June 23-27

Mon.: e-mail your Process Analysis essay by 12 midnight

Tues.: Read examples of Comparison essays in the textbook, pp. 504-526.

Wed.: Read students' examples of Comparison essays. Discuss your response to these student essays on our Discussion Group (Nicenet) and respond to other classmates's responses. Please read the directions for this essay under the icon Essays.

Thurs.: Post rough draft of your Comparison essay on Discussion Group. Respond

 

Week 5 June 30-July 2

Mon.: e-mail your Comparison essay by 12 midnight.

Tues. : Study Usage words for exam. (Click on the icon "Tests" on the website for the words to learn.) I will post final exam topics and the usage test on the Discussion Group.

Wed.: Both essay and usage test will be due Wednesday night by midnight.
