Copernicus -- made humankind realize the universe was not earth-centered.

Newton -- 1687 showed that heavenly bodies conformed to motion mathematically predictable. Orderly universe with cause and effect. But no miracles possible any longer.

Darwin -- 1859 man had evolved from lower forms of life. Man was not specially created and given an immortal soul distinct from animals.

Freud -- argued that man is driven by irrational impulses of which he is not aware, instead of rational action. Freud also shows that our impulsive belief in god is nothing but childish psychological penomenon mirroring the relationship with the father-figure.
