Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus. Symphonies No. 40 and No. 41 "Jupiter". Cond. Jeffrey Tate. English Chamber Orchestra. EMI, 1984.

"It was during the summer of 1788 that Mozart committed to paper his last three symphonies [39, 40, 41] . . . With no immediate prospect of performance, and setting aside for the moment his growing burden of financial worries and personal sorrows, he had produced in less than two months three of his most important and enduring masterpieces."

Symphony No. 40: "Although the overall mood is not heavy enough to be termed tragic, there is a certain poignancy in the characteristic chromatic falls of a number of the melodic ideas that suggests sadness and nostalgia; compared to the optimistic 'Jupiter' it is a work of pathos" (Douglas Hammond, 1984).
