"It was clearly Vivaldi's intention to take the concerto form, which he had done so much to establish, to the limits of its capability by cramming into it a riot of descriptive music. 'Harmony,' represented by traditional froms, was put in the dock and challenged by 'Invention,' represented by the most imaginative fancies Vivaldi could muster" (Robert Dearling, 1985).
