T.S. Eliot
The Waste Land

Part V.
"What the Thunder Said"

The solution Eliot found for the collapse of values after WWI was Buddhism. He found comfort in this religion, but ultimately, Eliot converted to Roman Catholicism.

Notes

Line 346 - Water - Cleansing - Rebirth - Change is coming

To have self control and compassion will prevent future wars.

Desire in live is bad and will lead to death, war, destruction

Man should strive for what comes after life and not be so selfish in this life

Buddhism = peace - thinking outside ones self

Eliot & Buddhism

The Gods command three things in the thunder:

" Datta" - to give alms

" Dayadhvam" - to sympathize or have compassion

" Damyata" - to have self control

In order to reconstruct after World War II human nature must change. Man must break away from the self-centered mindset and reach outside the self. Man must become more spiritual. Self-centeredness creates desire which ultimately leads to war/destruction.

" Shantih" - translation: "the peace which passeth understanding"

"The ultimate goal of Shantih will aid in reconstruction and ensure no future wars.
