Textbooks: The Norton Anthology of American Literature II, fifth edition
Course description: The study of major writers from the Realistic Movement to the present with an emphasis on written analysis. The analysis and evaluation of these works in their historical, cultural, and social contexts, and the study of their contributions to the growth and development of American literature.

Daily Schedule
8:00-8:20: Classroom B-112: Good morning, caffeine, roll call, return and collection of response papers, informal discussion of response papers, a look at possible themes and topics, assignments for the day: groups for data bases, search engines, or print.
8:30-9:30: English computer classroom D-130: Groups of students will research criticism, biography, history and culture of the day's authors.
9:30-10:00: Chat Room: Sharing information gleaned from research, and responding to fellow-students
10:00-10:20 Break
10:20-11:40: B-123: Student-led discussion, instructor wrap-up and audio or visual aids
11:20-11:55: Journal writing: closure and memory-aid: sum up the morning's work
Evaluation:
10 response papers, 1.5 pages long, typed, double-spaced. These will be graded on grammar, thoughtfulness, appropriate selection of quotations, 60%
Chat room participation, 10%

Final Exam: Essay, 20%

Data bases: American Reference Library (historical primary documents); Literature Resource Center, the Gale Group
Search engines: Alta Vista or Google. (Evaluation of websites: Who's the authority? Is this a university-sponsored website, an instructor's? What are the instructor's credentials? Is this the website of a scholarly journal? Or is this a student's or an enthusiast's website? Is it commercial?)

Late paper policy: I will not accept late response papers. If you cannot attend class, please e-mail me your response paper.
Attendance: After two absences, excused or unexcused, you must drop the class. I will no longer accept work turned in after two absences.
Final exam: May 29
