Dickens uses synecdoche in creating Bleak House. That is to say that “each character, scene, or situation stands for innumerable other examples of a given type.” Or to put it another way, “In a synecdoche a part of something is substituted for the whole, or the whole is used in place of one of its parts. ‘Ten sail’ thus stands for ten ships.”

So what is Bleak House?

What is Jo a synecdoche of?

What is Tom-All-Alone’s?

Sir Leicester Dedlock?

Chancery?

Orphan or neglected children?

Bad parents?

Language: signs and texts? Letters, documents, etc.
