FAQ'S

Who should be a Tech Prep Student?

A Tech Prep student can be any student who is interested in pursuing preparation for a high-tech, high-skill, high-wage career. The Tech Prep student can be a hands-on learner, or a student entering the non-baccalaureate labor market, or the average student looking for a challenging program.

How do Tech Prep and college prep differ?

College prep traditionally prepares students for the four-year route in pursuit of a traditional professional career. Tech Prep provides multiple exit points for the student. Some pursue certificate programs after graduation, others continue on toward an associate degree, while still others continue in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. The student can also earn tuition-free college credit while still in high school. Tech Prep is college prep with an EDGE! The student has job-ready skills, tuition-free college credits, and is prepared to continue his education.

If a student is not planning to go to the community college, why should they take Tech Prep courses?

Tech Prep courses prepare students for the real world by providing job-ready skills. While the student may not pursue that particular career, it could provide a starting point in the career search. It is also the first opportunity for many students to take a college-level course while still in high school.

Can Tech Prep students go to a four-year college?

Absolutely!

Are Tech Prep credits transferable to four-year colleges?

Many colleges recognize the Tech Prep credits. The University of North Texas readily recognizes all Tech Prep credits, as well as the University of Texas at Arlington thru the Texas Two-Step Project. Once a student has earned an associate degree, they may be more appealing to the four-year college or university, especially since they have proven their success.

Why do students need to formally ask for Tech Prep credits. Can’t they be automatically posted on their transcript?

The transcript is a legal document, and as such requires student permission to add or affix Tech Prep information. Students must complete 6 credits at the college before they can petition for their Tech Prep credits.

How are Tech Prep students identified?

When the student takes a Tech Prep course and completes registration online, he is entered in a database. Upon high school graduation, the student receives a student identification card with a listing of all the Tech prep courses he took while in high school. Presentation of that card to the college will facilitate the identification of Tech Prep students.
