Kim Mlcak Literature II 2333 February 1, 2004 My Favorite Vacation We have a wonderfully diverse immediate family as well as extended family. So, my favorite vacation is when we took all four of our children, two nieces, and my parents and went on a week long cruise. My favorite vacation place is any cruise with my family. We drove down to Galveston to meet the ship in the early afternoon on a Sunday in July. We all boarded the ship, unpacked and settled on it. The three girls shared a room, the three boys shared a room, and both sets of adults had their own rooms. The ship was scheduled to visit Cancun, Cozumel, and Roatan, Honduras. We were supposed to visit Cancun but the waves were too high on the day we were to dock, so the ship could not get into the port-of-call. Instead, we ended up spending two days in Cozumel. The first day, we all took a tour of the city and then did some shopping in the stores as well as with the street vendors. The second day, some of our group went scuba diving, while the rest of us either sun bathed on land, the ship, or did more shopping and exploring of the city. The ten of us ate all of our evening meals together and talked about what we had done during those two days. After dinner we usually went to a show and then dancing. Most of the kids stayed up late and ate at the midnight buffet. I have never seen so much food in my life. The second port-of-call was Roatan, Honduras. The two oldest kids went on an all-day canoe trip to a peninsula on the other side of the island and explored the marine life with snorkeling, and swimming. The rest of us took a city tour that included some shopping, a trip to a rescue bird sanctuary and a dolphin study and training center. The bird sanctuary had many bird species who had been saved from injuries, malnutrition, or abandonment. We were able to walk around and pet most of these fascinating creatures who had free reign of their sanctuary. When we reached the dolphin center, we were allowed to pet the dolphins. We even got to watch the dolphin show. It was awesome. The time on the ship was very relaxing as we were able to play bingo, cards, and other ship games. We relaxed in the sun around the pool, read books and talked a lot. It was truly a magical trip. It was the last time that all of us have had the chance to get together at once. Since then, three of the kids have gone away to college, while three are still attending school at home. The oldest child has even been married in the interim. I hope that someday we will all be able to get together again and enjoy each others' company as much as we did on our family cruise.
