I have another point of view that differs just a little from the one that i gave earlier. My perspective is that this man is in the meadows just by himself. He starts talking to himself and asking questions, which he goes ahead and answers. At his state, which is well explained by the tone of this poem, which is sad and sickly, lonely and desperate, sees this beautiful lady. She is lovely and he likes her.He imagines giving gifts to this lady and also receiving gifts from her.At this point, he falls asleep right where he is. He dreams with this lady, "who is sleeping beside him". After some sleep, he wakes up to his dream and finds that he is by himself. He feels bad about this whole situation that had given him some hope but now it looks as if it is all gone.As many of us might have gone through, we sometimes get a little less than what our expectations were. This is yet another perspective: This man might not have fallen asleep, there might not be anyone who was asking him questions, but may be he was thinking about a past relationship, describing how he met his beautiful lady, and how soon the relationship ended. He may have used the dream to show how quickly time passed by when both of them were in love. He may also have used the dream to show how much he was willing to stay in the relationship, but in the same way that none of us expects what to dream when we fall asleep, it could be the same way he did not expect the relationship to end.
