"To Autumn" is a poem that brings the reader through the stages of autumn itself, starting with the end of summer and ending with the approach of winter. Each stanza focuses on a certain sense that appeals to that stage of autumn. The first stanza is rich in imagery, leaving an impression of fullness and heaviness, using the sense of touch/feeling. The second stanza starts moving towards the harvest, but it is still sleepy and not yet ready to begin harvesting. The sense of sight and smell are evoked with the drowy poppies and other images. Finally, the third stanza sits on the edge of winter's approach, evoking the sense of sound. Keats uses lots of natural imagery and appeal to the five senses to give to reader an intense feel for the progression through autumn.
